BARNESVILLE, Ga. — A Georgia couple is behind bars after investigators said a 2-month-old baby was admitted to an area hospital with several fractured bones and other wounds.
According to the Griffin Daily News and the Herald-Gazette, the infant’s mother, 30-year-old Jessica Coffey, and her boyfriend, 28-year-old Phillip Norman, are facing first-degree child cruelty charges in connection with the injuries.
The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office learned of the alleged abuse Feb. 9 after doctors examined the baby at WellStar Spalding Regional Hospital in Griffin, the Daily News reported. X-rays revealed that the child, who had a swollen leg, also had suffered 19 rib, arm, leg and ankle fractures, deputies said.
The baby was later moved to an Atlanta hospital for additional treatment, the Daily News reported.
Deputies arrested Norman, of Barnesville, later that day and Coffey, of Milner, on Feb. 11, according to the booking log. Both have been denied bond, the Herald-Gazette reported.
