PATERSON, N.J. — A 30-year-old New Jersey man surrendered to authorities Saturday in connection to the Thursday ambush and shooting of a pregnant woman outside her home.
The victim, identified only as R.L., delivered a healthy baby before succumbing to her injuries, WNBC reported.
According to prosecutors, Donqua Thomas lay in wait outside the 31-year-old victim’s home for 90 minutes, opening fire on her when she returned to her residence and exited her vehicle, the TV station reported.
Thomas has been charged with first-degree murder, which carries a possible sentence of 30 years to life in prison, and three second-degree weapons charges, each of which carries a possible five- to 10-year sentence, NJ.com reported.
R.L., who was eight months pregnant, was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center and delivered the baby before dying. Hospital officials confirmed to NJ.com that the child is healthy and remains in stable condition.
Police previously stated that the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute, and that the suspect was the baby’s father, NJ.com reported.
