Men recovering after lightning strike at Mandarin home

Three men are recovering after a lightning strike hit while they were working on a roof Thursday afternoon on Marilyn Anne Drive in Mandarin.

There were four men working on the roof of the home when the lightning struck.

One of those roofers was actually hit by the lightning strike, one man fell from the roof, and another was also injured because of the powerful jolt.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded to the incident that left the man struck by lightning with severe burns.

Officials say the four men were working for Lennar Home Workers were on the roof when the lightning struck the man, lead to another to fall from the roof and left the third with minor injuries.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating this incident.

One neighbor described the storms moving in to the area around the time of the incident to Action News Jax.

“It looked like the darkest, blackest cloud I’ve ever seen," said Hope Combs.

Around 3 p.m. Thursday, when the roofers were injured, the Action News Jax Weather Team was tracking 25 to 30 lightning strikes every 10 minutes.

“We always say when thunder roars get indoors,” said Action News JAx Meteorologist Arielle Nixon.

Nixon also said the energy from a lightning bolt can surpass the power of nuclear reactor and there are only 2 places in the world that see more lightning that florida.

“Because we’re more populated, you’re more likely to get hit in Florida," said Nixon.

After seeing this scene combs tells us she’ll be keeping a closer eye on the weather

"I could look over here, nice and clear. Nice and clear over there a little bit could but that’s nothing unusual, that’s just normal Florida," said Combs.

The Action News Jax Weather Team is expecting more strong storms again Friday and reminds residents that lightning can strike up to 10 miles away, so be aware.
