Tropical Storm Julia hits Northeast Florida

A tropical storm formed over Northeast Florida and brought heavy rain and wind to Jacksonville and surrounding counties.

Ponte Vedra Beach to Altamaha Sound in Georgia were under a tropical storm warning as Julia moved up the coast.

Emergency management crews in Duval and Nassau counties said they were monitoring the storm.

Mayor Lenny Curry told Action News Jax he was in touch with Gov. Rick Scott and the state is ready to respond if needed.

Action News Jax has not been advised about any school closures.

A flood warning was been issued for Duval, St. Johns County and areas in Southeast Georgia.

A wind advisory was issued for our coastal counties until 10 a.m. Wednesday with winds between 25 and 35 miles per hour and gusts of 45 miles per hour expected.

Local impacts were expected to include:

• Heavy rain bands pushing inland, including 3 to 4 inches or more near the coast and 1 or 2 inches inland through Wednesday
• Localized flooding in spots
• Gusty winds mainly along and east of the St. Johns River 
• Some beach erosion due to persistent onshore wind and higher surf. High rip current risk at area beaches
• There is an isolated tornado risk this evening mainly along and east of Hwy 301/I-95 to the coast

Some wind will be present over portions of Northeast Florida and heavy rains will continue to spread upward toward Southeast Georgia Wednesday.
