29-year-old Jacksonville man killed after swerving to avoid disabled vehicle on I-295, FHP says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 29-year-old man is dead after swerving to avoid a disabled driver in the center lane on I-295 South and hitting another vehicle stopped on the shoulder, per the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

The crash happened around 5:13 Sunday morning.

According to FHP, the man was traveling southbound on I-295 south of Wilson Boulevard in an SUV. Another car was stopped on the inside shoulder. The driver of the second car was helping the occupants of a disabled car in the center lane.

The man attempted to avoid the disabled car in the center lane. When he swerved to the left, the front of his SUV collided with the rear of the second car. The SUV rotated counterclockwise, blocking the left travel lane. The crash is under investigation.

According to FHP’s report, the man who was killed was from Jacksonville. He was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the second car sustained no injuries.
