JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An investigation is underway to find out what’s causing burns on the wings of local birds.
Many of those birds have died and many more may never fly again.
"If you love animals, you don't want to see them die and it's just that simple," said Cindy Mosling, founder of B.E.A.K.S. (Bird Emergency Aid and Kare Sanctuary).

Mosling said that is exactly what is happening..
"Their motor skills are impaired, but they have lost their protective coating on their feathers and they're wet," Mosling said.
Since the beginning of the year, Mosling said nearly 100 sea and diving birds have died with more being rescued. She said in the past, chemicals in the water caused it.
"It's something that's removing their water proofing substance," Mosling said.
And it's happening more frequently and birds are being found along places like Mayport, Huguenot Memorial Park and Talbot Island with loss of motor skills.

"They're suffering and it’s sad it's going on. I don't know what it is, I’d like to get to the bottom of it to stop it," Mosling said.
Action News Jax reached out to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and was told that they weren’t aware of this happening.
But FWC is encouraging people to reach out if birds are found in this condition.
The Department of Environmental Protection is working with Mosling to document when and where this is happening.
