Care-a-Thon raises money to fight childhood cancer in Jacksonville

The Jacksonville community is coming together in the fight against childhood cancer as Action News Jax radio partner News 104.5 WOKV held their annual Care-a-Thon event at Nemours Children Specialty Care Friday.

The goal: raise $200,000 to go toward the Child Cancer Fund of Northeast Florida, which helps local families on their cancer journey.

Since 2015, the event has brought in more than $250,000.

The Child Cancer Fund is there to walk families and children through the unimaginable, every step of the way.

“When your child is diagnosed, you’re in a world you didn’t even know exists,” Carol Kiernan the Vice President of the Child Cancer Fund said.

In addition to emotional and education support, the fund provides financial assistance to pay bills, groceries, travel, and other expenses.

The Child Cancer Fund also funds the Child Life Specialist at Nemours, whose focus is to help make the treatment more tolerable for the children. Kiernan said it’s a critical role.

“I don’t think any family would make it through without the Child Life Specialist,” Kiernan said.

The hotlines will stay open until 7 p.m. If you would like to donate, call 855-636-6877 or click here.
