JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — On the National Day of Service on Saturday, Sept. 12, Carry The Load will bring volunteers together to clean and beautify headstones at national cemeteries across the United States.
The Jacksonville National Cemetery and St. Augustine National Cemetery are two of many across the nation participating.
The volunteer initiative encompasses 141 participating locations, including 105 Department of Veterans Affairs national cemeteries, 21 VA grant-funded cemeteries and 15 private cemeteries. Each location will conduct a brief ceremony followed by volunteer instructions on headstone restoration and cemetery upkeep.
Most events are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Houston National Cemetery in Texas is scheduled to begin earlier at 9:30 a.m. local time. Volunteers at participating locations may arrive 30 minutes before the start time to prepare for the day’s tasks.’
The service opportunity is open to corporate employee engagement groups, youth organizations and individual volunteers. Beyond physical site maintenance, participants are encouraged to post on the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Legacy Memorial’s veteran’s memorial page.
