ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew is facing a civil lawsuit in connection with an alleged incident at the Conch House over the 2013 Memorial Day weekend.
Kasim Howard, a security guard at the Conch House, said Jones-Drew hit him in the face in the 2013 incident. According to St. Johns County Clerk of Court Records, Attorney Patrick T. Canan was assigned to Howard's case on June 3.
According to the complaint, Howard is accusing Jones-Drew of battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Howard is also seeking a jury trial and, according to the complaint "requests an award of compensatory damages against Defendant Maurice Christopher Jones-Drew with an award of costs, attorney fees, and any other relief the Court deems just."
"Mr. Howard is a private person and is not interested in lots of attention from this case," Canan said in a statement. "He simply wants justice. He was viciously sucker punched by Mr. Jones-Drew over a year ago. We have been patient investigating the case and determining the extent of Mr. Howard's injuries. They are serious and life altering."
A personal/individual summons was issued for Jones-Drew on May 30, court records show.
"The State Attorney shut this down after reviewing everything. We haven't heard anything in ages and then we get a lawsuit after he moves to Oakland? We will deal with this in the judicial system as we have everything else," Jones-Drew's attorney Hank Coxe said in a statement.
In June 2013, the State Attorney's Office said it wouldn't prosecute Jones-Drew due to a lack of evidence.
