On Wednesday, Green Cove Springs Police announced a third man has been charged in connection to the shooting death of Skyler Townsend.

Police also say they’ve recovered a gun believed to be involved in the crime.

“GCSPD investigators are now in possession of a firearm believed to be involved in the shooting/death of Skyler Townsend on 11/17/2020,” GCSPD said in a Facebook post on Wednesday. “One male subject has been charged with Tampering With Evidence in connection to the incident. The firearm, and other evidence, is being processed. This is all the information we can share at this time, as this is still an active investigation.”

On Sunday, police announced the arrests of Kieshawn Ray Capri Smith, 23, and Daveion Austin, 20, on charges of armed robbery in connection to the triple shooting.

None of the men charged in connection to the shooting have been charged with killing Townsend.

Reports, warrants and affidavits:

On Wednesday, Action News Jax obtained arrest reports, affidavits, and warrants for Austin and Smith.

The warrants accuse the men of armed robbery on Nov. 17, the day of the shooting, and were obtained by GCSPD on Saturday. Austin and Smith were arrested the same day.

Austin’s arrest report states he was arrested by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office after an anonymous tip led deputies to his location.

Smith’s arrest report says he was brought in for an interview at GCSPD on Saturday.

The report states Smith was unaware of the active warrant for his arrest when the interview began.

“… I was met by Kieshawn Smith at the Green Cove Springs Police Department for the purpose of a non-custodial interview. Unbeknownst to Smith, a warrant had been issued for his arrest charging him with robbery,” an officer writes in the report.

The report then states Smith was notified of the warrant, his identity was confirmed, and he was arrested.

Prior to his arrest, the affidavit for the arrest warrant indicates investigators twice interviewed Smith “while recovering at the Orange Park Medical Center for his gunshot wounds …”

The summary of what Smith told investigators was redacted from the affidavit obtained by Action News Jax.

On Tuesday, police told Action News Jax the two other people injured in the shooting had survived.

A spokesperson said one man is in jail, and the other is a minor who is not charged with a crime.

The affidavit also describes details of the shooting scene on Center Street.

It states officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Center Street around 6 p.m. on Nov. 17 in reference to gunshots fired and possible injured victims.

“… Upon arrival on scene, patrol officers discovered a young white male lying on the road with apparent gunshot wounds,” the affidavit states. “… Officers also discovered a second black male gunshot victim in the 1100 block of North Street. Both victims were transported to the Orange Park Medical Center (OPMC).”

Action News Jax has requested the arrest report and warrant for the third man charged in connection to the shooting. We’ll be sure to update you once they are received.
