JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In the past three days, there have been two fatal, wrong-way crashes.

On March 13, FHP says a silver Hyundai was driving northbound in the southbound lane of I-295 from Beach Boulevard.

It crashed with a BMW, which eventually lead to the driver’s death.

The most recent was last night around 9 p.m., when an FHP report says a black Toyota was traveling the wrong way along I-10 and crashed into a white Volkswagen head on.

DOT footage from last night shows the deadly head-on accident along I-10 that left two dead.

Now, the woman who witnessed the accident and called 911 describes what she saw.

“The noise of the impact, it was just so loud,” witness Martha Ebel said. “It was a loud boom, and then you just see like, smoke go up and you see glass and vehicle parts go everywhere.”

According to FHP, the 71-year old male was driving west in the eastbound lane.

Ebel said she was heading to a friend’s house.

“I had to slam on my breaks. I’m skidding down 10 and I had to swerve to the right to miss the whole accident,” she said.

Between the damage of the accident and knowing that it left two dead – the witness said she’s never seen anything like it in her life.

Now, she is asking for more signs along the ramps in hopes of saving lives.

“A lot of times, you have a lot of on and off ramps right next to each other and you might not always notice the wrong way sign,” she said.

Action News Jax has contacted the city on what steps can be taken to prevent these fatal crashes.

Back in 2018, FDOT added 272 new signs to intersections and off ramps, including 764 replacement signs throughout Duval County.
