JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — More than 53,600 students completed Florida Virtual School’s Driver Education course during the 2025-26 school year. The enrollment milestone followed a 2025 Florida law change requiring teens under age 18 to complete an approved driver education course before obtaining a learner’s license.
The online course is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to meet the state requirement. The completion numbers coincide with National Teen Driver Safety Week, during which the FLVS Teen Driver Safety Club sponsored awareness events.
The curriculum covers traffic laws, road safety, defensive driving techniques, and responsible decision-making. Students also participate in simulated driving activities to practice applying safety concepts in realistic scenarios.
Deborah Adams serves as an instructional leader at FLVS. “Learning to drive is a significant milestone and with that milestone comes important responsibilities,” Adams said. “Quality driver education helps students develop the knowledge, awareness and decision-making skills needed to navigate real-world situations and build safe habits on the road.”
The course is offered through FLVS Flex to students across Florida enrolled in public, private, charter and home education programs.
Derek Stewart is the driver education coordinator for FLVS. “Not every student has access to driver education through their local school,” Stewart said. “Through FLVS Flex, students across Florida can learn the fundamentals of safe driving, regardless of where they attend school or how they receive their education.”
Since the driver education course was launched, more than 1 million students have completed the program through FLVS.
