JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — City Rescue Mission is opening its cooling centers in Jacksonville to provide relief from forecasted high temperatures.
The centers will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. today and on any upcoming days when the temperature reaches 95 degrees or hotter.
Guests visiting the cooling shelter will receive a hot meal, clean clothing, and a cool place to rest out of the heat. Paul Stasi, executive director of City Rescue Mission, emphasized the need for community relief during the summer peak.
“As the summer gets even hotter, we will provide cooling centers open to the public,” Stasi said. “We want to make sure that our neighbors in need have cool shelter and a place to rest.”
The cooling shelter is operating at City Rescue Mission’s New Life Inn, located at 234 W. State St. in Jacksonville. Organization officials are encouraging residents to stay indoors during the extreme heat to ensure their personal safety.
City Rescue Mission is a faith-based nonprofit organization that has served Jacksonville and Northeast Florida for 78 years. The organization operates two campuses in downtown Jacksonville and the Lackawanna area, assisting individuals experiencing hunger, homelessness, and addiction.
Annually, the mission serves more than 281,000 meals and provides more than 85,000 nights of shelter. In addition to emergency shelter care, the organization runs several recovery and support programs, including Overcomers, Crossroads, LifeBuilders Residential Recovery and Workforce Development.
The cooling centers will continue to open on any subsequent days when temperatures are forecasted to reach 95 degrees or higher.
