Residents are outraged and heartbroken after trying to save kittens that were tossed from moving cars onto local roadways.

“I cried, honestly. Me and everybody else was shaking. We didn’t really know what to do,” said Anna Fair.

Fair said she saw someone throw a black kitten out of a moving car on Saturday on Third Street in Jacksonville Beach.

She said the kitten ran across three lanes of traffic to the gas station where she works.

“I decided to take it upon myself to bring him home with me. I was still on the clock at work, so I held it in my sweatshirt as I was checking people out,” said Fair.

She took him home, gave him a bath, fed him and found him a new owner who’s getting his injuries checked out.

“Obviously, they don’t have any soul if they’re just throwing a living, breathing animal that can’t defend itself out a window,” said Fair.

Two weeks ago and five miles away, Caitlyn Martin said she saw a kitten get thrown out the window of a moving car on Beach Boulevard on Jacksonville’s southside.

“I was in complete shock, bawling, in tears,” said Martin.

The kitten was too badly injured to save.

“Her diaphragm was shattered. Her bladder was ruptured. She could barely breathe, like, her lungs were collapsed,” said Martin.

A kitten named Harrison was injured in April after getting thrown out of a moving car in Arlington.

“I didn’t realize there are other situations like this, that people are just tossing kittens out of their car on the side of the road,” said Martin.

A spokesman for Jacksonville Beach Police said if you see this happen, you should call them and they’ll come investigate for animal cruelty.

Jacksonville Animal Control said to call 630-CITY during business hours and provide as much information as possible for Animal Control to investigate. City spokesperson Tia Ford said to call the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office if it’s after hours. Ford said getting the tag number and the names and contact information of any other witnesses is also helpful.
