Police say 8-year-old Christopher Scurry Jr. of Jacksonville accidentally shot himself while he was staying at his grandparents' home in Port Orange.

Action News Jax spoke to Christopher's mother on Tuesday, who said Friday she got the phone call she never expected.

"She said, 'well, Christopher been shot and you need to come,” Davina Gooden said.

A 911 call mentions the gun that was used in the shooting. It has now been reported that the gun was reported stolen.

“He don’t know where my 8-year-old got the gun from,” Gooden said.

It’s a question Gooden is trying answer after her son accidentally shot and killed himself.

“He loved food. He loved football. He loved God. He sung in the choir,” Gooden said. “Lil” Chris and his 12-year-old brother were spending the summer in Port Orange with their grandparents. He didn’t deserve to die and my question still is – why?”

Gooden said her mom is a gun owner but doesn't know how she stores it. Police said the gun that Lil’ Chris had was reported stolen from Daytona Beach. In a 911 call, a family friend can be heard talking about the gun while trying to help save Lil’ Chris.

911 caller: “Hey get over here, get over here, I don't want you walking away. I don't know where that gun is, I don't want you touching nothing, alright.”

"We don't know the exact circumstances under which the child acquired the gun," said Action News Jax Law and Safety Expert Dale Carson.

Carson said as tragic as this case is, it could get more complicated.

“The individual who was in control or in charge of that home, whether it’s the grandfather or a grandmother or some other adult in that living environment, would be chargeable under the Florida State Statute,” Carson said.

“Just like y’all got questions, I got the same ones … I’m going to let the police do their job and whatever they need from me, I’m here,” Gooden said.

Christopher’s funeral is set for this Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church.
