Jacksonville's bicycling community is remembering a cyclist who lost his life during an annual ride.

Wayne Ezell, an experience bicyclist and former editorial writer for the Florida Ttmes-Union, was killed while riding his bike in Iowa.

“I was devastated,” said Jodi Hohlstein, a member of North Florida Bicycle Club.

Hohlstein said that's how she felt the moment she heard the news about her friend. She met Ezell through the North Florida Bicycle Club.

“It’s hard to lose anybody in the cycling community," Hohlstein said. "It’s even harder to learn that someone you admire and respect and such a good friend was met with such a tragic ending."

Hohlstein said Ezell was hit while participating in RAGBRAI, the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle across Iowa event.

He was following his North Florida Bicycle Club Team when he was hit by a truck.

He used his writing skills to help with the monthly newsletter, she said.

The newspaper sent Action News Jax a statement that read, in part:

Wayne Ezell was the ultimate journalist, reporter, editor, publisher, reader, and advocate and editorial writer. He personified the best in journalism, his passion for the profession never wavered.
