JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Luau, a rescue dog with hind leg paralysis, has been transferred to the care of Pug Rescue of Florida & Georgia.
When Luau first arrived at the shelter, she had no use of her hind legs and was unable to relieve herself on her own. Observing her determination, an animal services officer gifted Luau a wheelchair of her own to provide her with mobility.
Pug Rescue of Florida & Georgia arranged a foster placement for Luau in a home familiar with caring for wheelchair-using dogs. The placement was arranged to provide the specialized daily care her medical condition requires.
The rescue group originally established operations in 2003 as Pug Rescue of Florida, functioning as a non-profit 501(c)three animal rescue organization. In 2021, the group expanded by obtaining an official license as a Georgia foster-based rescue organization, adopting the name Pug Rescue of Florida & Georgia.
The non-profit operates through a network of volunteers and foster homes. Its operations are sustained through fundraising efforts along with financial support from private individuals and commercial entities.
Each year, Pug Rescue of Florida & Georgia rescues approximately 195 pugs and pug mixes from surrenders, shelters and unsafe situations. The organization incurs more than $349,000 in annual expenses to rehabilitate, rescue and rehome the dogs.
