PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — A Satsuma man was arrested for hit-and-run after striking a crossing guard with his car on Palm Avenue as the guard helped students cross the road, says the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
According to officers, 42-year-old Brian Ferrell was turning right from St. Johns Avenue onto Palm Avenue when he hit the crossing guard. He ignored her sign and presence in the walkway; allegedly, after hitting her, Ferrell continued on his way and did not check on her or stop, which is required by law.
Several people saw the incident and checked if the crossing guard was safe. One of the witnesses gave Palatka Police Officers the license plate of Ferrell’s car.
Ferrell was quickly located and arrested for hit-and-run. He was transferred to the Putnam County Jail and was released on a $150 bond.
The sheriff’s office reminds the public that school is back in session and there will be an increase in traffic around Palatka schools. The crossing guard finished her crossing duties and walked away with bruises.
