JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Families who tried to salvage belongings from their charred homes after a fire at Pointe Sienna Apartment claimed 16 units were turned away Tuesday.

There are several 'Do not enter' and 'Condemned' signs at the complex and security sits in front of the building after the destroyed units and left 11 families homeless.

The apartment complex told Action News Jax the city condemned the building until further notice.

“It’s just the structure of the building is not safe. It’s really not safe. The building has been deemed condemned,” said Candice Davis, who lives at the complex.

Davis said the complex put the families up in new apartments at the complex but she says they need a lot more than a place to live.

“They want their belongings so they can get back to their regular lives,” said Davis.

Davis said many of the residents were left with nothing.

She said one of the residents' most dire needs is furniture.

"We have 27 children without beds," she said. "Some of those are toddlers that need even cribs.

"If you'd like to donate items for the residents, visit the main office at the complex at 7200 Powers Avenue.
