24/7 emergency shelter opens after another closes in downtown Jacksonville

This Easter week, the City Rescue Mission held its annual dinner feeding those in need, but the hearty meal of ham and macaroni and cheese is feeding more than their stomachs.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In efforts to support people experiencing homelessness, Rescue City Mission opened an around the clock shelter.

The Overcomers Program will provide services and resources for individuals trying to transition into affordable housing. The 12-week program assigns care workers to each person that enters.

Social workers will work on developing an exit plan and building job applications. Hot daily meals and bedding is included in the plan.

In March, the City of Jacksonville forced people living at a homeless camp on Jefferson Street to relocate to temporary warehouse in downtown. That shelter closed for good on Thursday, leaving more than a 100 people without a place to sleep.

Anyone interested in the program can stop by the shelter on 426 McDuff Avenue South in Riverside.

Donations are expected through the City Rescue Mission which goes into more food, shelter and helps those recovering from addiction.
