Abandoned building catches fire, closes Blanding Boulevard Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A busy roadway was closed Sunday morning after a fire broke out at a building for the second time in two years.

A witness told Action News Jax that he called 911 after he saw smoke coming from a building while driving down Blanding Boulevard around 6 a.m.

A fire crew returning to the station from a previous call in the area also noticed the smoke coming from the former Video Empire.

The building was fully engulfed by flames when crews arrived.

The rear wall of the building collapsed as a dozen fire rescue crews worked to put out the flames.

Officials said it took approximately 20 minutes to get the fire under control. No firefighters entered the building during the fire fight due to the severity of the flames.

Officials tell us the abandoned building is a complete loss.

The first fire in February 2014 was ruled accidental, according to the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department.

No one was inside the building and no crews were injured during the fire fight.

Crews checked a nearby business for damage but determined it was minimal.

The state fire marshal responded to the scene and is now investigating the cause of the flames.

Blanding Boulevard was closed for several hours as crews were on the scene.
