Beachfront homeowners receiving easement letters in first step to restore St. Johns County beaches

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Neighbors in St. Johns County who live along the shoreline got to speak with county leaders about a project to rebuild and restore South Ponte Vedra and Vilano beaches.

The county has mailed out easement packets to certain homeowners. It's the first step in allowing the Army Corps of Engineers to start working.

Brendon Thach not only comes to the South Ponte Vedra Beach for fun, but he also depends on it for his livelihood.

He's one of the creators of "Hey Skipper'" a show on YouTube with almost 250,000 subscribers.

"In our show we teach all sorts of families and parents, kids how to fish," said Thach.

Action News Jax bumped into him as he was wrapping up a shoot on the beach. We shared with him the plan to help rebuild and restore the beach front.

"I base my whole life around the beachfront. It's everything," said Thach.

St. Johns County has partnered with the Army Corps of Engineers and the state to help make sure the beach is here for generations to come.

The project will focus on 3.1 miles of coastline from Serenata Beach Club to the Nease Beachfront Park.

The first step is to secure easements from homeowners whose properties are in this area.

County commissioner Jeremiah Blocker spoke to us about the plan.

"I want our citizens in that part of the county and other parts of the county to really be able to enjoy their property and enjoy the beach," said Blocker.

If you're wondering what the restoration plan will look like, we know it will include more sand to fortify the dunes but as far as a complete plan -- that's still in the works.

"There's different easements that will have to be acquired in order for the Army Corps to implement and impact the project," said Blocker.

For Thach and those who own property along the beachfront, knowing that a plan is in the works is a good first step.

"It's very important to a lot of people in the area," Thach said.

County representatives made themselves available Wednesday night at Guana River Road to answer any questions local homeowners may have. If you didn't get a chance to attend the meeting you can call the county (904) 209-0655.
