Caught on camera: Nassau corrections officer attacks inmate

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Action News Jax has obtained video of an attack on an inmate inside the Nassau County Jail.

The corrections officer in the video was fired and is now facing a misdemeanor battery charge. The inmate was being held there on a warrant out of Kentucky and had only been in the jail behind me a couple days when the attack happened.

The corrections officer is now out of a job because of what's on the video.

This video from inside the Nassau County Jail was taken July 1. Inmate Kyle Volp is asleep on the bunk. Moments after getting out of bed, an officer is seen coming in.

The Sheriff's Office said that corrections officer is Andrew Sasser, a 4-year veteran with the jail. Sasser appears to be saying something to the inmate, then pushes Volp back into bed. Moments later, two other officers walk in as Sasser continues to hit the inmate, taking him down to the ground and according to reports, kneed the inmate.

Volp was arrested in June on a warrant out of Kentucky.

According to the investigative reports from the Sheriff's Office on July 10, Sasser met with the undersheriff and asked for a hearing.

But according to a letter from the sheriff on July 23, Sasser "declined to offer any response or other information."

The letter also said Sasser declined the option to address the findings by the agency.

We tried calling Sasser. A woman who answered said Sasser had no comment and that we needed to call his lawyer. His lawyer had no comment on pending cases.

The one question not answered in any of these reports is why this attack happened. The undersheriff said they don't know what prompted it.

The Sheriff's Office said they couldn't do an interview because Sasser's father told them they intend to pursue legal action.

The undersheriff said the other two officers in the video were only there to restrain the inmate.
