Clay County High Schools promote PINK OUT recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — Clay County Athletics is partnering with the American Cancer Society, #FirstCoastStrides Initiative, the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation and the National Football League (NFL) to promote PINK OUT month - Breast Cancer Awareness Month - through their varsity high school football games.

The County’s varsity high school football players will sport the NFL’s Breast Cancer Awareness Crucial Catch decals on their helmets as fans wear all things pink. And they do mean all things pink! High schools will also host individual fundraisers raising both funds and awareness during the month of October, nationally designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

John Sgromolo, the County’s Athletic Director describes the month-long efforts as a community wide, “family” partnership for a good cause.

“We challenged all of our Athletic Directors to hold PINK OUT games and utilize our varsity football teams to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” he said. “Fans are encouraged to wear pink. And each school is responsible for their own individual fundraiser.”

The flagship kickoff game will be held on Friday, October 7, at Middleburg High School at 7:00 p.m. as the Broncos take on their rivals, the Clay High School Blue Devils.

Sgromolo says this is the first year the month is being celebrated County-wide. He described the schools are excited to be working together.

“Breast Cancer doesn’t discriminate,” he continued. ”No one is exempt from the heartbreak that hits families when Cancer becomes prevalent. Most of the students across the County have been affected by cancer. These kids understand the visible impact they can make in helping to raise funds.

Sgromolo added that the students enjoy wearing pink “as they see the NFL players wearing it during the month of October.”

“I encourage everyone to come out to enjoy the games and support such a worthy cause,” he concluded.
