LAKE CITY, Fla. — The Lake City Police Department responded to calls about an alarming object found at Lake City Mall on Sunday.
Upon arrival, officers observed a cylindrical object wrapped in multiple wires that resembled an explosive device.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol assisted LCPD in evacuating the mall and a portion of the parking lot to secure the area.
Upon closer inspection, the object was determined to be a sub sandwich, wrapped in paper and wires. The object was then collected as evidence and nearby businesses were allowed to reopen.
“We greatly appreciate the swift cooperation and patience of those who were affected by the evacuation,” Lake City Police Chief Argatha Gilmore said. “While it turns out that this object was most likely intended only to cause fear, or as part of a prank, it is always best to be cautious when responding to this type of threat.”
According to Florida law a “hoax bomb” is any object that appears to be a destructive device, but is, in fact, an inoperative imitation.
It is a second-degree felony to leave a “hoax bomb” in public view.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Lake City Police Department at (386)752-4343.
