Daughter of father killed in hit-and-run on Acosta Bridge: 'I know ... he's just watching over us'

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The daughter of the man killed in a hit-and-run Wednesday night on the Acosta Bridge is speaking out.

Fifty-five-year-old Husein Brkic was fatally struck while changing a flat tire in the emergency lane on the bridge.

The incident shut down the bridge's northbound lanes.

On Thursday, Action News spoke with Brkic's 16-year-old daughter. Tina Brkic told Action News it really hasn't sunk in yet that her father is dead.

"He was always there for me," said Tina.

Tina was heartbroken after finding out her father was killed Wednesday night.

"I know he's watching and he's just watching over us, I know that," she said.

Tina said her father worked two jobs to support her, her mother and her 17-year-old brother.

"He loved us so much and everything we would want he would get us. Even if we were broke, he'd get it for us. He'd do anything to make us happy," Tina said.

Husein Brkic was killed around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was hit by a car while trying to change his tire.

"He called me and he was like, 'My tire is flat ... . Can you come by and help me out?'" Tina said.

When Tina got to the bridge, all she could see were the flashing lights.

"I see cops all around and I see him on the ground, a white cover over him, and I knew it was him. I was so upset. I wanted to come up to him. At least give him my last kiss to him because you know he's my father and he means so much to me," Tina said.

A father gone and a daughter now trying to find peace, all while police are still looking for the driver responsible. The Florida Highway Patrol said there were no witnesses to the hit-and-run and not much evidence was left at the scene. They're asking for anyone with information to please contact them.

A fund has been set up to help support Brkic's family with his funeral costs. GoMeFund link: http://www.gofundme.com/qgr88qcw
