Dentist accused of hurting children received millions in Medicaid reimbursements

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News has confirmed new information about a Jacksonville pediatric dentist accused of mistreating children. Action News received figures from the State of Florida about the amount of money Dr. Howard Schneider has received from Medicaid.

Since 2010, Dr. Schneider has received $3,947,305 in Medicaid payments.

Dr. Schneider has been practicing in Jacksonville for 49 years and accepts child patients on Medicaid. Schneider is also a member of several managed care plans, including Staywell, United, Universal, Wellcare, Sunshine, Children's Medical Services and First Coast Advantage. The state doesn't have the amount he's receiving from those plans.

Since late April, parents of patients have protested outside his office on University Boulevard, holding signs that demand his office be closed down. As of Wednesday, Dr. Schneider's office was open.

"There's been too many kids who have come out of this dentist office with damaged teeth and mangled faces," said Michelle Hammack.

Angry parents took to social media to document their claims that Dr. Schneider has hurt children, but the dentist has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. The state Attorney General's Office has an active criminal investigation against Schneider, something he said he knows nothing about.

“I haven't done anything. I don't know about a criminal thing,” Schneider previously told Action News.

According to court records, Schneider was the defendant in two professional malpractice suits in Duval County in 1995.
