City asks DONNA Foundation to move Mother’s Day 5K so it won’t be during Jacksonville early voting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The city of Jacksonville is telling Democratic Mayoral candidate Donna Deegan to reschedule her foundation’s Mother’s Day 5K because it’s slated to occur during early voting.

Deegan, a Democrat who is in a runoff election for Jacksonville mayor with Republican Daniel Davis, tells Action News Jax’s Jake Stofan this race has been happening for the better part of 20 years.

At this point, she said it’s too late to reschedule this event, which is aimed at raising money for breast cancer research.

In a statement, the DONNA Foundation said in part, “DONNA Foundation operates independently of Donna Deegan’s mayoral campaign … We sincerely hope that this matter is resolved quickly so we can all move forward and restore our focus where it belongs: on celebrating survivorship, supporting breast cancer patients and funding critical research.”

Early voting for Duval County’s General Election runs from May 1-14. The 5K is set to take place on May 13.

In response, Jacksonville Chief Administrative Officer Brian Hughes said in part, “It is not a denial and it is not an approval … Since it was an invitation to consider a reasonable alternative and to follow up in discussion, the organization choosing to ignore the invitation and instead give an incorrect account to media is a disappointment.”

We’re hoping to hear more from Deegan and the city later this afternoon. We’ll have all that coming up on Action News Jax at 5.
