JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — With an arctic blast heading our way this weekend, we could all use a reminder of the resources that are available.
Below you can find different resources and tips to stay warm and safe this weekend.
JACKSONVILLE COLD SHELTERS
- Sulzbacher will provide cold night shelters to those who need it in Jacksonville this weekend. From Friday, Jan. 28 to Sunday, Jan. 30 the agency will set up sleeping areas in dining rooms and library areas.
- Women and families can go to Sulzbacher Village at 5455 Springfield Blvd.
- Men can go to Sulzbacher Downtown Campus at 611 East Adams Street.
- Sulzbacher will also have temperature screenings as part of its social distancing guidelines.
- City Rescue Mission will extend overnight shelter services during the weekend.
- Guests can check in at 234 W. State Street starting at 2:30 p.m. each day.
- All guests will receive a hot meal, access to showers, clean clothing and a warm space.
- Guests will be required to take a COVID-19 test and should anyone test positive quarantine is available.
- Mission House at 465 11th Avenue North (32250) will provide shelter from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Trinity Rescue Mission at 622 W. Union St. (32202) will provide shelter. To find out more call 904-355-1205.
- Beaches: Mission House at Jacksonville Beach will provide shelter at the parish hall for St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal. It will be open from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.
ADDITIONAL COLD SHELTERS IN SURROUNDING COUNTIES
- In Nassau County, the City of Fernandina Beach and the Coalition for the Homeless of Nassau County will provide a cold shelter at MLK Jr. Auditorium (1200 Elm Street).
- From Friday, Jan. 28 and Saturday, Jan. 29.
- Doors open at 6 p.m. and you must arrive before 10 p.m.

TIPS TO PREVENT FIRES
The Red Cross says to install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas and test smoke alarms.
Additionally, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department advises you should be careful when plugging in heating appliances.
- Keep space between the appliance and flammable objects and make sure the amps are not too high for the plug.
- Never leave your heating appliance unattended.
- If you have an extension cord make sure its UL certified.
- Make sure your circuit breaker can trip.
COLD WEATHER TIPS FOR PETS
The Jacksonville Humane Society has provided tips to keep your furry friends safe during the cold.
- Bring your pets indoors.
- Limit walk times to 30 minutes for large dogs and 15 minutes for small dogs if temperatures are in the 20s.
- Set up shelters for community cats. Learn more here.
- Knock on car hoods before starting cars to make sure no cats have climbed under them.
- Snuggle your pets to keep them warm.

COLD WEATHER TIPS FOR PLANTS
Lower temperatures can be harsh on plants if they’re exposed for too long. Follow these tips to keep them safe
- Bring potted plants inside or under a covered porch.
- Place a small sheet or frost cloth over the plant/landscape.
- Push mulch around planted, smaller plants.
