JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It’s a Christmas tradition thousands enjoy each year. The lights display off Girvin Road is something that even the pandemic couldn’t stop, but it might not survive unhappy neighbors.
Dick Burnett has lived in the neighborhood off Girvin Road for 40 years.
What started as luminaries on Christmas Eve has turned into a spectacular display of starry lights strung up across trees down the road.
“It just grew and grew and grew,” Burnett said.
Burnett says he wouldn’t trade it for anything.
“You see all these cars, everybody smiling everybody, is having a good time,” says Burnett.
The light display has become a Christmas tradition for thousands of families. The Kelly family has been coming here since for over a decade. For them it’s more than just lights, especially this year.
For them it’s more than just lights, especially this year.
Tracy Kelly exclaims, “COVID didn’t take this away, and just to see the joy in everybody’s faces and everyone always wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. It’s just very joyful for us.”
Unfortunately, now that this has become a staple in the Jacksonville area, traffic can sometimes be rough, especially for some of the homeowners who live here.
As Action News Jax first reported last week, an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office had to direct traffic.
On Christmas night it was no different. We watched three officers directing traffic at various points along Girvin Road.
So Burnett said he and his nephew will be scaling back next year.
“The way he put the lights together, you’ll never see anything like this and you won’t see anything like this again, because this is the last year you’ll see this.”
But his message will always remain the same.
“God bless everybody and God bless America.”
