Families concerned about Micklers Landing beach access closure

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Mickler’s Landing is a favorite spot for locals, and tourists.

“It’s beautiful. I love finding sharks teeth,” Jennifer Fine said.

It won’t be nearly as crowded come Monday.

County commissioners voted to allow a company to use Mickler’s Landing as a staging area for beach renourishment work contracted by 13 Ponte Vedra neighbors.

In an Oct. 1 commission meeting, Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Billy Zeits told commissioners the contractor was looking to use the beachfront park for up to 60 days.

The county posted on Facebook Friday, saying the parking lot, walkover and all-related facilities will be closed weekdays from Nov. 4 to February 2020.

TRENDING:

“To shut the whole parking lot down for months for a few private homeowners on the beach, that’s not fair,” Dustin Sewell said.

Other families shared the same frustrations on Facebook.

Action News Jax called and emailed three commissioners Sunday to talk about families' concerns.

A county spokesperson got back to us via email saying they understand the concerns and that renourishment of St. Johns County beaches is a top priority for the county.

Action News Jax is now working to learn why the entire parking lot had to be shut down rather than a portion of it.

Sewell says he’s not sure where he’ll bring his dog Moose during the next few months.

“Hopefully they can work something out to where they can still get their job done but all the county residents and all the visitors can still come to the beach here,” Sewell said.
