CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — 6:30 p.m. update: Louise Gonzalez, 81, of Middleburg, died Friday morning after she was hit and killed by two vehicles at the intersection of County Road 218 and Country Estates Road.

Neighbors told Action News Jax feared something like this could happen in the area.

"People just need to slow down and pay attention," said Derek Cox, who travels the area frequently.

Cox says more should be done improve safety for pedestrians and drivers alike.
"I see the traffic flying up and down this road every day, morning, and even the afternoon," said Cox. "(There needs to be) more patrols out here, maybe some red lights."

The crash shutdown traffic for about four and a half hours, and even caused some students at nearby Wilkinson Junior High to miss classes due to canceled bus routes.

Those students were granted excused absences.

FHP says citations or charges would depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
