Fernandina Beach shark bite victim able to walk again

It's been more than two months since a shark clamped down on Dustin Theobald's right foot, but he is now starting to get back on his feet, literally.

The bite ripped his tendons and caused severe plantar fasciitis.

Action News Jax first covered the shark attack in July. The pictures we obtained of the wounds were so graphic, we had to blur them.

Theobald said it was a challenging time in his life.

He said, “I’m not the type of person that’s used to asking people for help, so it was a big transition."

Eight weeks after the attack, Theobald can walk and drive again.

The third week of September marks his return full time to his job.

He spent three weeks in rehab at the Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute, practicing exercises like one leg stands and tasks on the elliptical.

He said, “We’re starting to move up to the next level. I’m feeling good about it now. I’m happy.”

Theobald says he’s already been back on the water fishing, but still has not been in it surfing.

He said he can’t wait, saying, “I am excited. I don’t want to push it too hard but the waves looked awesome the other day. I sat out on the beach for hours just watching everybody surf.”
