While the investigation is still ongoing, FHP has said that a pickup truck driven by a 19-year-old man was traveling south on U.S. Highway 17. A sports utility vehicle was traveling north, in the opposite direction.
The driver of the pickup failed to maintain control and veered onto the right shoulder. He then overcorrected his direction, entering the northbound lane into the direct path of the SUV heading northbound.
The front left of the truck collided with the front left of the SUV. After the impact both vehicles came to a final stop on the northbound shoulder.
FHP says that the 38-year-old driver of the SUV died as a result of the crash. Two other passengers in the same vehicle sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
