Freebird Live's last weekend in Jacksonville Beach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It is the last weekend residents can have fun at the popular bar and live music venue, Freebird Live.

The music venue has been a staple in Jacksonville Beach for 16 years.

The last concert at the venue is Jan. 20.

The company posted a statement on its website:

"Freebird Live is in the process of being sold, however, we are still open and continuing to bring you great live music until our final show on Wednesday, January 20th with GALACTIC!

Freebird Live has been a staple in the community for over 16 years and we're planning an epic blowout of shows leading up to our final show!  We want your input, so give us your suggestions for your ultimate artist/show."

"I was born and raised here, so I have seen a lot of shows there. Less Than Jake, Hank Williams III, Charlie's Angel's band, No Effects, Candle Box, and the list goes on," said Marc Funari, who has lived in Jacksonville Beach his whole life. He said he and his friends have spent a lot of time over the years at Freebird Live.

"Me and a bunch of friends, we used to look forward to going to the shows every weekend," Funari said.

Action News Jax first reported in September that the owners of Freebird announced on social media that the venue was in the process of being sold at that time. The plan for the venue is to become home to Surfer the Bar.

People who live in the area say they just want whatever company moves in to be successful.

"I know it's going to become the Surfer Bar or something, but I hope it's not just going to become another vacant building out here, which is kind of upsetting," Funari said.

One of the bands listed on the marquee on Friday, Galactic, will play the last show at Freebird Live on Jan. 20 and Funari said he will be there doing what he always has.

"We're going to go next week, a bunch of guys are going to go and give them support for the last show we se there, so we're going to make it a good one," Funari said.
