NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — The sheer nature of the crime that unfolded Tuesday night outside of a Walmart in Yulee is sickening to friends of the victim.
David Lee has been next-door neighbors and friends with Steven Swan for more than 20 years.
"Who would do this to him? I mean you couldn't ask for a finer person, a family man. I can't say enough good about him," said Lee.
Lee said Swan loved his wife, children and grandson and was very active in the community.
Action News found out Swan was a general foreman at a mechanical shop on Kings Bay. There he met his coworker turned killer, 59-year-old Allen Fourtunia.
"Fourtunia lost his job and held Swan and another supervision responsible for losing his job. He made several death threats to the victim in the past for ruining his career," said Nassau County Undersheriff George Lueders.
According to deputies, Fourtunia happened to see Swan leaving the Walmart Tuesday and snapped.
Police say he hit him with his car then got out and pummeled him to death.
Walmart security and witnesses tried to stop Fourtunia but he sped home, where he exchanged gunfire and held police at bay for six hours.
But it was Fourtunia's own bullet that killed him and his fit of rage that ended an innocent man's life.
"I can't even fathom why someone would do this to him," said Lee.
Swan's family tells Action News they are grieving and would like privacy during this difficult time.
