Historic cemetery in St. Augustine getting a facelift

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — The remains of about a thousand people are buried in the Tolomato Cemetery, in St. Augustine.  Some date back to the Spanish Colonial period.

But leaders and locals say the fence surrounding the cemetery does not reflect its importance.

"Regrettably, it's an eyesore and it certainly isn't fitting," said Susan Ott, a resident of St. Augustine.

The Tolomato Cemetery Preservation Association is making a push to get rid of the rusty barbed-wire fence and replace it with a tall, black fence fit for a historical site.

The association will need at least $80,000 to get the project going.

"The first thing that has to be done is the wall has to be repaired, and that's going to be a restoration project," said Elizabeth Gessner, president of the Tolomato Cemetery Preservation Association.

There have been pledges for donations, but the project still has a long way to go.

The goal is to have the brand-new fence in place by next summer, in time for the 450th Commemoration.
