JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacquelyn Garcias is a self-proclaimed safe driver. The local mom told Action News Jax even she is guilty of texting while behind the wheel.
“I try to only do it when I’m at a stoplight, but it doesn’t always happen,” she said.
Under a law that went into effect on July 1, officers can pull over any driver they see texting while driving – it's a primary offense.

A report released Wednesday by the Department of Highway Safety says between July 1 through Sept. 17, Florida Highway Patrol handed out 438 warnings.
The document shows statewide all law enforcement agencies issued 542 citations between July 1 and Sept. 11.
It’s a good thing, it really is. I know people get distracted, I know I can get easily distracted,” Garcias said.

In October, drivers will be cited if they’re caught using anything other than a hands-free system in school or work zones.
Garcias said it's good motivation to focus on the road in front of you.
“That’s probably a good idea, too,” she admitted.
FHP said most troopers are just issuing warnings for distracted driving through Dec. 31.
