Hundreds of Nassau County students to change schools after rezoning vote

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Hundreds of students will be headed to new schools next year.

In a unanimous vote, the Nassau County school board approved to rezone the school district, meaning that Zone 1 for Fernandina Beach schools includes everyone on Old Nassauville Road for the upcoming school year.

Students from Zone 2 who live on that road and go to schools in Yulee are now zoned for schools in Fernandina Beach.

Charles Parker said he has three kids in Yulee schools who will now be headed to schools in Fernandina Beach.

"My son he's really upset about it, he's now in Beta Club, he has his life set around Yulee," Parker said.

And his main concern is that grades will slip.

"My daughter went to Yulee for high school, then Fernandina and her grades dropped by half," Parker said.

About 1,200 students are at schools in Yulee with about 900 students in Fernandina Beach schools, and the school district is hoping this move will help with the overcrowding.

Rusty Torrans is in ninth grade and he said he’ll be leaving behind his friends.

"All my friends are in Yulee, I’ve been there since fifth grade. I don't know anyone who goes there," Torrans said.

A woman, who didn’t want to be identified, said her grandchild signed a form and is waiting on approval from the school district to stay at Yulee High School.

"I have lived here my whole life, never had a high school, got a high school and now they want to take it from our kids and put them in Fernandina again," the woman said.

The school district is giving parents the option to provide their own transportation to the school if they want to stay, but there’s an application process before it's approved.

There are also plans to make accommodations for students entering their senior year.
