Chunks of dunes are washed away in Atlantic Beach after Hurricane Irma.

Action News Jax told you back in June that more than 600,000 sea oats were planted into the dunes to help restore them from 19th Street at the way to the Nassau County.

But neighbors say those were badly impacted from the hurricane.

“There was a beach renourishment a couple months ago with new sea oats planted in the dunes," resident Glenn Croft said. "Those are gone now."

Deputy city manager of Atlantic Beach Kevin Hogencamp says the city will be doing an assessment shortly.

He says from what he's seen so far, the northern part of Atlantic Beach got hit the worst and says the area wasn't wasn't covered in the recent beach renourishment project.

"The plans to renourish the beach were made before Hurricane Matthew," Hogencamp said. "During that assessment, the northern part of Atlantic Beach didn't meet the criteria to be renourished."

Action News Jax also spoke with councilman Bill Gulliford who says once an assessment is done, a formal report should be available.

He says they’ll also be looking into what kinds of financial assistance they can apply for.
