A motorcyclist was killed in the crash, which happened at 12:30 p.m., the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Florida Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed motorcycle on fire shortly after the crash.
Chopper video showed two other motorcyclists stopping at the scene. Debris was scattered all over the accident scene.
According to troopers, a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle struck the rear of a red 2018 Ford F-150. The motorcycle was then struck by a trailer being pulled by a semitruck.
All three vehicles remained at the scene, troopers said.
Crews were forced to shut down State Road 9B at Philips Highway in an attempt to control the traffic backup, which grew to five miles.
"I know it had to be something big, something terrible," said motorist Jo Ann Jameson.
Troopers allowed trapped motorists to turn around on the highway and take the nearest exit to the south.
