Jacksonville security guard recovering after shooting outside club

A security guard is recovering a month after he was shot outside a Jacksonville club.

Jason Torres said his shift had ended on Feb. 25 when an argument broke out inside Gold Rush on North Main Street.

"They seemed like they started to leave. I went back inside and all of a sudden all I hear are gunshots. Boom, boom, boom," Torres said.

Torres, an Army veteran, said he ran outside and started rushing people inside to safety.

"By the time I grabbed that last person and shoved them into the door, that’s when I turned around and felt a pressure hit my chest."

Torres says a bullet went in his side and came out of his chest.

"It damaged muscles, organs. It barely missed my heart by literally not even an inch," he said.

He said he nearly died during surgery that morning, and he's had several more since.

Doctors told him it could be up to a year before he's fully recovered. No one has been arrested in the shooting.

Torres had already put his security guard gear -- including his vest and pistol -- in his car at the end of his shift. He said he felt defenseless against the person who opened fire on the crowd.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released a photo of the silver car the shooter was believed to have been in.

"It was a packed club. The entire parking lot is full and you're telling me not one person knows anything? I have a problem with that," Torres said.

Torres said he believes someone will eventually come forward -- and he was glad he was able to help everyone else make it home safely.

A GoFundMe was created to help with his medical bills.
