Jacksonville Sheriff's Office makes arrest after deadly shooting near school

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Deonta Clark, 22, has been arrested and faces charges in the fatal shooting of Raynard Hayward. The Sheriff's Office said the shooting occurred on Friday in the 1300 block of W. 16th Street.

The Sheriff's Office responded Friday to a shooting near Stanton College Preparatory School, which triggered a lockdown. Police confirmed two people were shot near 16th Street and Myrtle Avenue.

According to a JSO arrest report, Clark attends Robert E. Lee High School and is also a gang member.

Police said the incident started after an altercation and ended with both Clark and Hayward being shot. Hayward later died from his injuries.

The arrest report says witness told police Clark and Hayward were argueing over a girl when Clark pulled out a handgun and shot Hayward. The witnesss told police Hayward fell to the ground and was lifeless when Clark walked over and shot Hayward two more time.

Hayward's friend then pulled out a gun and shot Clark in the arm, chased him and fired two additional shots towards Clark, accroding to the arrest report.

Several blocks along Myrtle Ave were closed off for more than six hours while police investigated.

The Sheriff's Office said that on Friday morning around 11:30 a.m. its shot spotter technology picked up gunshots near 16th Street and Myrtle Avenue.

Thanks to the shot spotter technology, police were able to respond immediately.
