Mother Claudia DuVal says she experienced symptoms that were not normal.

“It started off with excessive anxiety. Deep, deep spells of depression that just kind of kept me indoors in the safety of my home...I was hypervigilant. I was cleaning obsessively. Just behaviors that, in hindsight, I realize were not normal,” DuVal said.

Executive Director of Postpartum Support International, Wendy Davis says some women keep these symptoms to themselves.

“If you have these symptoms, and you are depressed or anxious, you’re left to think ‘Oh, I’m not meant to be a mother’ I shouldn’t tell anyone,’ and that is why people don’t reach out,” Davis said.

Experts say the number one thing is knowing the symptoms and understanding they are temporary and treatable.

People can get help by calling or texting the postpartum support international hotline 1-800-944-4773.
