Patrick McDowell, suspect accused of killing Nassau County deputy, remains hospitalized Wednesday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — All eyes are on UF Health in Jacksonville where Patrick McDowell, the man accused of killing a Nassau County deputy, is recovering after being shot by SWAT on Friday.

On Tuesday, the search for McDowell ended after a five-day manhunt.

McDowell was handcuffed using Deputy Joshua Moyers’ handcuffs and was taken to UF Health where he is being treated for his injuries.

“When he shot the dog a couple nights ago SWAT members returned fire and he got struck in the right thigh and it grazed the top of his head,” Sheriff Bill Leeper said.

Sheriff Bill Leeper said McDowell was also bitten by a K9 during his arrests on Tuesday.

McDowell was found hiding in a bathroom at a concession stand at a sports complex off Ballpark Road in Callahan.

The sheriff said he was nursing a bad wound and he was trying to reach out to people to get him help.

“He knew if he went to the hospital, we would find him,” Leeper said.

Sheriff Leeper said that McDowell’s leg was also wrapped in a soccer shirt when they found him.

UF Health couldn’t comment on when McDowell is being discharged and the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office told us it would depend on the extent of his injuries.
