Neighbors in Jacksonville's San Mateo area concerned about speeders

A Northside neighborhood is worried about the safety of children. People in San Mateo said drivers routinely go nearly twice the 30 mph speed limit.

"On average, probably about 50 mph, without a doubt," resident Jennifer Hull said. "With all the construction on (Interstate) 295, we’re a direct route, and people use it as a short cut and it's going to get progressively worse."

The speed limit on Baisden Road is 30 mph with the suggested speed of 20 mph going around the curves.

"We’re an older community. There's a lot of senior citizens that live here that walk, with the amount of heavy traffic that flies through here," Hull said.

A power pole outside of Carolyn Hall’s home was struck twice by vehicles and knocked down. It has since been replaced.

"Had the pole not been there, they would have come in my living room," Hall said.

Action News Jax reached out to the city spokesperson to see if the city is aware of the residents’ concerns. We were told that the city received two reports about signs, but nothing about speeders.

"I would love to see more speed limit signs, better presentation of it," Hull said.

And with an elementary school on this same road, Hall said she’s worried one of the children will get hurt.

"The kids are walking and you can see them on the sidewalks and when those cars come that fast, they lose control," Hall said.

Neighbors said they have been calling the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to get more officers into the neighborhood.

We reached out to JSO about this area, but have not heard back.
