Police investigating another Jacksonville child drowning

Police are investigating what caused a 4-year-old to drown at a family member's west side Jacksonville home Sunday evening.

Officers said the drowning happened in the 6000 block of Caprice Drive at about 8 p.m.

Investigators say the incident occurred at a family member's home during a Fourth of July cook-out.

The girl was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Neighbors tell us they saw people running out of last night’s party screaming when an officer carried the young girl away.

Action News Jax has reported three child drowning's in the last two weeks alone including this most recent incident.

The Florida Department of Child and Families says they’re also seeing a spike in child drowning's and near drowning's.

"It can happen to you one way or another," said Amber Caudill, a Jacksonville mother whose 4-year-old son Ethan Brander drowned in the family's Keystone Height pool on June 30. "Every friend and family member I know at this point who have had pools, no longer have pools because they're in fear that something like this can happen."

In the past month Action News Jax has reported drowning's or near drowning's in Duval, St. Johns, Clay and Nassau counties.

"It’s important for people to watch the pools," said Caudill as a message to anyone around a pool with children.
