Action News Jax law and safety expert says the sheriff's office should look into why officers allegedly brought a man into a back room before he was handcuffed at a Jacksonville convenience store.
Demarcus Brown said he went inside Ethio Food Store on the Northside to check on his father after he saw officers rush inside.
Officers were at the store for a drug bust. Brown said officers told him not to go inside and started to slam him around after he did.
A camera angle shows what happened to DeMarcus Brown when JSO undercover detectives allegedly took Brown into the storage room.
The video shows a detective allegedly striking Brown several times. The altercation is not mentioned in the police report Action News Jax obtained.
On Friday, we were told there isn’t more to this report.
“Clearly at the juncture that he enters the store and he engages with police or engages with him, he’s under arrest, clearly, he’s not free to go,” said Action News Jax law and safety expert Dale Carson.
But Carson said he doesn’t understand the continued beating inside the storage room.
“To the extent that he was moved to the back room with the thought that it would not be covered by camera, that’s something that certainly needs to be looked at by the sheriff’s office,” said Carson.
Action News Jax Larry Spruill asked JSO for an interview and asked whether these officers would be reprimanded.
They sent us a statement that said in part, "An internal affairs complaint was filed and they can’t comment any further."
Brown said he was never arrested on a drug charge but was charged with resisting an officer.
His attorney is working to get those charges dropped.
