JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Imagine walking outside one day and realizing there is a hole in your apartment building. A local woman found, much to her surprise, just that outside her apartment building in December.
She snapped the photo at Century Deerwood Park Apartments.
In it, you can see black, decaying wood.
“It just looks like the building has rotted. The big structure holding the building together has rotted,” the tenant said.
Today it looks a lot different, but the tenant has the same concerns.
“I definitely did not see anything besides them just nailing in some new siding and painting it,” the tenant said.
Was the mold completely removed, or is it still there underneath?
The tenant said she’s tried to address it on her own with property management and the City.
With no luck – that’s when she reached out to Action News Jax.
We sent the picture to the City for comment.
Officials said code officers visited the complex last Thursday morning to check out the wall but could not find any rotting.
The city also said the property manager said the building got a “facelift” and they’re completing renovations they started in October.
However, when Action News Jax asked the property manager about the rotting wall, she told us no comment and pointed us to corporate.
We called and emailed First Communities about the wall and finally got an answer.
We received the following statement from the company’s Director of Compliance and Operations Nicole Griffith:
“An inspection discovered roof leaks which caused isolated areas of wood rot. A third-party contractor was promptly engaged to take immediate remedial measures. The work was completed after permits were granted. County professionals inspected the work before completion as is their normal course.”
“While water intrusion damage pictures are not sightly it’s important to note that the landlord took prompt, professional measures to remediate the condition. To date, all the reported areas have been successfully repaired with the exception of painting, which has been scheduled. We are not aware of any outstanding resident work orders related to the same.”
