St. Johns man arrested for shaking, spanking 1-month-old baby

ELKTON, Fla. — A local man is now behind bars after deputies say he beat and shook a 1-month-old baby girl.

Nicholas Carson Hamilton, 25, is in the St. Johns County Detention Center without bond.

After an argument with the baby's mother, the sheriff's report said Hamilton "started spanking the baby on the bottom, took a sheet and placed it over the baby's face to make her stop crying." It goes on to say he "shook the baby 10-15 seconds," and said to the baby, "I'll give you something to cry for."

A neighbor said she saw deputies at the home before.

"I have about a year ago and that's probably why I wasn't approaching the situation with warm fuzzy cookie deliveries or meeting your neighbor or anything," said Jenny Bookhot.

The report also said he threatened the baby's mother saying, "If she called anyone, he was going to kill her."

"Something that doesn't happen around this neighborhood were peaceful and quiet here," said another neighbor.

DCF tells Action News the baby is OK and it's investigating. Hamilton is facing third degree felony charges.
